Should Kids Be Allowed To Take Trips? by Jonathan Chin
Every year students in every advisory class take trips to various places that usually take place near the end of a chosen school day. While it takes up time away from the classroom, it can be a fun and bonding experience for everyone who participates. This brings us to an important question that has been brought up by students and teachers. Should students have time off from school for their advisory trips when better usage of time can be used? Is advisory trips pointless and time consuming?
A very important aspect of the advisory trip is that students get to learn new things about each other and to do something that requires bonding. When students go to a trip together, they become stronger friends because they have more things in common and have done something together that doesn't happen everyday. You may learn some new things about a particular student that you have never knew could have been possible. For example, you can take knowledge about someone that likes a particular game or sport and become buddies with them in that field. Going on an advisory trip is also a bonding experience as mentioned before. You get to do things together that bring each of you closer to one another. Whether it is bowling or going on a picnic, it requires cooperation and more. Some common advisory trips include watching a movie, playing a sport, taking a hike and more.
Conversations are started when nothing is done to keep things in motion. Questions are asked and new strengths and weaknesses are built upon. Topics about school and life are brought up. When one person shares a bit of their life with someone else, they open the discussion on key everyday issues. The time that you spend with the people that you see everyday will be an experience that none of you will ever forget. Sometimes, you may not get a chance to talk to someone that you really want to. The advisory trip can be a chance to do this. It is something that is not done often and is special because of the occasion. New friendships can be started and a better understanding of each other will lead to better individuals. To me, the time lost in school is not much because assignments are pushed back along with the lessons. Tests can be made up and projects can be extended. The time that you spend with your advisory can be a magical experience if you make it one. In the end, the question is whether we should have more advisory trips during the year.
